history of Florence, Florence at sunset, aperitif on the Arno river

Available from May to late September

Discovering Florence from its river is a one-of-a-kind experience, a slow and magical journey offering a unique perspective on the city.

The Arno has always been the lifeblood of Florence, bringing both prosperity and challenges. It has been celebrated by the greatest poets, including Dante, in their works.

Thanks to this river, Florence became one of the wealthiest cities in Europe between the 13th and 14th centuries, flourishing in the textile industry and expanding along its banks.

Today, just as in the past, we will sail the Arno aboard the traditional wooden boats of the renaioli, rediscovering the magic of the river and the breathtaking landmarks that rise above it.

A historical journey on the Renaioli boats

For centuries, the renaioli were workers who navigated the Arno to collect river sand and gravel, essential materials for construction.

Today, their historic boats offer visitors a unique experience, gliding under Florence’s bridges and alongside its stunning Renaissance palaces.

The best time for this tour? Sunset! As the sun sets behind the Tuscan hills, golden light reflects on the rooftops and façades, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

Passing under Ponte Vecchio: a once-in-a-lifetime experience

The Ponte Vecchio, with its suspended goldsmith shops, is one of Florence’s most iconic landmarks. But from the river, it reveals an entirely new charm.

But did you know it once housed butchers?

When, in 1565, the Medici family commissioned Giorgio Vasari to build the Vasari Corridor—a 1 km-long elevated passageway connecting Palazzo Vecchio to Palazzo Pitti—they faced a rather unpleasant issue…

The strong smell from the butchers’ shops that lined the bridge!

To make the passage more enjoyable, the Medici ordered all the butchers to be replaced by goldsmiths and jewelers, turning Ponte Vecchio into the glittering “golden street” we know today.

A Toast to Florence!

As we glide along the river, I will share captivating stories about Florence and its deep connection to the Arno, while you enjoy a delightful aperitivo served onboard.

A special moment to toast to the beauty of the city, the sunset over the Arno, and your unforgettable experience in Florence.

Let the river guide you and see Florence from an entirely new perspective!
