Women, art, Florence’s history, fashion, shopping

This tour is a fascinating journey into the world of women, both past and present.

How were young women educated in Renaissance Florence? What was considered the ideal beauty? Why was a large dowry so crucial? And what were the beauty secrets of Florentine women?

Through the stories of extraordinary women, we’ll explore their role in society, art, and culture, and discover how they shaped Florence.

Women, art, and spirituality: Santa Maria Novella

Our tour begins at Santa Maria Novella, where women played a surprisingly central role, despite it being a Dominican friary.

Here, we’ll meet fascinating historical figures, such as:

  • Ginevra degli Albizi, a symbol of Renaissance elegance, whose luxurious gown was exquisitely painted by Domenico Ghirlandaio in one of his frescoes.
  • Plautilla Nelli, a nun and the first known female painter of Florence, who founded her own all-women art school in the 16th century.
  • Villana dei Cerchi, who renounced her luxurious lifestyle to dedicate herself to spirituality and helping others.

Inside the Chapter House, we’ll admire stunning female allegories, each representing an art or a science—powerful symbols of women’s intellect and creativity.

Perfumes and ancient remedies: The Officina of Santa Maria Novella

After our visit to the convent, we’ll explore the enchanting world of perfumes and elixirs at the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, one of the oldest pharmacies in the world.

Here, we’ll uncover centuries-old beauty secrets, from herbal remedies to exquisite floral waters, once used by the noblewomen of Florence.

Art and craftsmanship: meeting a Florentine jewelry designer

Florentine women have always played a role in art and craftsmanship, and we’ll see this firsthand by visiting the studio of a modern female artist.

Florence has a long-standing goldsmith tradition, and we will meet Marina Calamai, a talented jewelry designer and true Florentine. In her workshop on Via Santo Spirito, she creates handmade jewelry using ancient techniques.

Her collection is a tribute to Florence, featuring pieces inspired by its churches and rich artistic heritage. One of her most remarkable collections is dedicated to Artemisia Gentileschi, the great Baroque painter, whose life and art embody female strength and resilience.

Marina will share her story, the creative process behind her jewelry, and the craftsmanship that still makes Florence a world capital of artisan excellence.

A surprise ending

To conclude our journey into the world of Florentine women, we’ll enjoy a delightful drink in a stunning location—but for now, that remains a secret!
